Summer

So the humidity finally hit the other day; I can't see through my window anymore, it’s covered in moisture.

It's 5 AM and I cannot sleep; why? My air conditioner has broken (again). It’s happened a few times this summer, and every time it happens I wake up at some ridiculous hour, I can’t get back to sleep. I think I might invest in a portable AC.

Rather than write a post moaning about the summer (which is unlikely to change the weather), I'll write a post about my AC (which is unlikely to improve the situation). It's a piece of crap.

The controller is a dial sort of contraption which uses a gauge to display the temperature, you rotate the dial, a little glass vial of mercury inside tips over and when you hit the right temperature it lets out a spark.

It's the stupidest AC I've ever seen. It's either 100% on or 100% off, there's no middle ground, you can't have 'slightly cold', it's either on or off. Sure, there’s a fan option, but if you put the fan on it makes humidity, the ground gets covered in a thin layer of moisture. Obviously you get covered in sweat if you use that option.

When I go to sleep I like a slight amount of airflow, so I put it down a tiny bit, because of this it stays on the entire night. If it stays on the entire night it freezes and stops working properly. So during the day for at least 3-4 hours it has to be switched completely off for it to ‘defrost’, if it has frozen and I forget to set it to ‘defrost’ I’m pretty much screwed as it’s not going to work in the evening.

In the event that it stops working the maintenance are called, who will diagnose, regardless of even if the AC were to be ransacked of all it’s useful parts that it is frozen and it needs to be switched off for a few hours.

I don’t like my AC.

(sorry for lack of posts, with any luck there’ll be a nice big 6000+ word post coming on here shortly)

A/C Basics: Your A/C has a trap under the condenser that catches all the water that condenses on the condenser. This trap has to have a pipe to the outside world to dispose of the water. Your pipe is blocked, so your trap is full of water, so it is far too humid around your condenser coils, and the entire system freezes up.

The solution is for you or your landlord to clean the trap, the pipe and the air filters.

After which, your A/C shouldn't freeze again for about 3 months, when it all has to be done over again.
